Position Title: Organist
Responsible to: The Session of The Presbyterian Church of Barrington, the Director of Music, and the Pastor as head of staff
Persons Reporting to Organist: Substitute organists
Broad Function: The Organist plays service and solo music as required during all worship services and provides leadership to the congregation by the playing of hymns that promote congregational singing. The organist also accompanies the Sanctuary Choir, soloists, and instrumentalists as needed, and practices music for all worship services to sufficiently maintain a professional standard of performance.
Principal Responsibilities:
- Plays for Sunday morning worship services.
- Plays for special worships services, i.e. Christmas Eve, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday.
- Rehearses with the Sanctuary Choir on a weekly basis.
- Rehearses with soloists and/or other music groups as needed.
- Accompanies the Sanctuary Choir for occasional additional events,i.e. extra rehearsals, concerts, Lessons and Carols.
- Plays for weddings, funerals, and memorial services in the church.
- Arranges for substitute organists as needed.
- Identifies the needs and cares for the organ and pianos in consultation with the Director of Music and the Pastor as head of staff.
- Works cooperatively with the Director of Music to support a concert series.
- Performs other reasonably assigned responsibilities.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Music or equivalent experience.
- Demonstrated commitment to church music ministry.
- Demonstrated advanced proficiency on organ and piano.
- Demonstrated ability to play for worship services.
- Demonstrated ability as accompanist.
- Interpersonal and organization skills.
- Conducting and singing experience desired.
Salary: Commensurate with experience. This is a 12-month, part-time position estimated at 15 hours/week.
