The Presbytery of Chicago gathered for its stated meeting on Saturday, September 13, at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, joined by nearby congregations as hosts (Carter-Westminster Presbyterian, First Evanston, and Northminster Evanston). For the first time in years, the assembly was held on a Saturday – a change that allowed families and those with weekday commitments to participate more fully. Worship centered on this year’s theme, God’s call to CREATE, with a message on creation care, vibrant music, communion, and an offering for Grace Seeds Ministry.
We welcomed several new pastors into the presbytery and celebrated the retirements of Rev. Barbara Gorsky and Rev. Beth Freese Dammers. Executive Presbyter Craig Howard introduced Julio Peña as the Director of Faithful Innovation, supporting new forms of ministry.
The assembly approved a new Paid Family Medical Leave Policy, ensuring at least 12 weeks of paid leave for pastors, reflecting our shared commitment to compassion and justice in times of illness, caregiving, and family growth. Reports also highlighted property sales, the successful completion of the 2024 audit, and a time for commissioners to share announcements and upcoming congregation events.
Next Assembly: Tuesday, November 18, 2025, Yorkfield Presbyterian Church, Elmhurst.
